I was thinking recently about how to vary combat difficulty in Dungeon World. This has been something that I’ve written about before: http://tyler.provick.ca/rpgs/easy-handling-difficulty-levels-dungeon-world/
I realized that something which may help create a gradient of difficulty is the idea that really weak creatures may not individually be considered a threat in combat and thus not require a Hack and Slash check.
Take goblins, for example. An individual goblin isn’t a threat to a warrior, but a group of 3-4 would be. Have players skip making hack and slash checks and just roll damage until they come up against a group of goblins.
